Bottle: snuff

Description

One glazed blue red and white ceramic snuff bottle. A narrow neck with a beaded rim surmounts an elongated rounded rectangular cylindrical body tapering towards a circular base. Body presents a continuous design of robed figures banners and a stone gate bearing Chinese characters.

Provenance

Gifted to Canterbury Museum by Alley in 1937 during a visit to New Zealand. In 1956, loaned to the Rewi Alley Chinese Art and Crafts Exhibition, held at the Provincial Council Chambers, Christchurch.
